The Police Act of 1861 instituted the system of police which sets the foundation of modern-day police in India. It continued as a part of the Madras Police in October 1953, after the birth of a separate Andhra State, that the Andhra Police gained individual existence. On 1 November 1956 integrating the Telugu areas of the erstwhile Hyderabad state with the Andhra State finally, the modern-day Andhra Pradesh Police came into existence. The police force once again bifurcated, After the bifurcation of the state in 2014. This time, it was divided into Telangana Police and Andhra Pradesh police.
A Police Station is managed by an Inspector (an upper subordinate rank). A Police Station is the basic unit of policing, responsible for detection of crime, enforcing law in general, prevention and maintenance of public order, as well as making security arrangements for the constitutional authorities and performing protection duties, government functionaries, representatives of the public in different legislative bodies and public figures, local self government bodies and local self governments, public figures etc. A Circle holds several Police Stations. An Inspector of Police who supervises a police circle is the Circle Inspector or CI.
Each police district is both with the Revenue district or is placed within several revenue districts. Which is headed by a District commissioner of Police (or simply called Superintendent of Police). Each district includes several circles and Police Stations, two or more Sub-Divisions.
