The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is a fast transportation system working in the city of Chennai (Tamil Nadu) In India. The operation began service in the year 2015 after somewhat opening the 1st phase of the CMRL project. The system consists of 2 color-coded paths covering a distance of 28.0 mi (45.1 KM). It is the 3rd biggest metro system in Asia/India after Hyderabad Metro & Delhi Metro. The CMRL (Chennai Metro Rail Limited), a joint undertaking between the Indian Government and the Tamil Nadu Government of operates and built the Chennai Metro Rail. The system has a mix of elevated stations & underground and utilizes a standard gauge. CMRL services run every day between 4:30 & 23:00 with a changing repetition of 5-14 min. As of Nov-2019, about 121,000 people use the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) service daily. There are forty-two trains with 4 coaches each, giving a total of one hundred and sixty-eight coaches, operating in the 1st phase.
The CMRL system has also prepared to take over the current Chennai Mass Rapid transportation System by the year 2021, which would be updated to work using the rolling property of the Chennai Metro Rail. CMRL was approved by the International Association of Govt Transport in the year 2011.
Development of the 1st stretch started in the year June-2009, which crossed the 7 stations Alandur to Koyambedu over a range of 10 km and started operation on 29th-Jun-2015.
