NHAI (National Highways Authority of India) was established by an act of the Parliament, National Highways Authority of India Act, 1988 “An Act to give for the build of an Authority for the maintenance, development, and management of national roadways and for a matter related therewith/incidental thereto”. It has been trusted with the National Highways(NH) Development Project, which onward with other lesser projects, has vested in it 50329 km of NH’s for management, maintenance, and development. Although National Highways compose only about two percent of the road network, it takes forty percent of the entire road traffic.
